Create peace through water: World Water Day 2024

This year we’re observing the 21st World Water Day. What will you do to be a part of it?

The United Nations declared March 22 as World Water Day in 1993. This day provides the opportunity to recognize the importance of water in sustainability efforts and invite individuals across the world to learn about water issues and increase access to clean water.

The 2024 global theme established by the United Nations is “Water for Peace”.

In a world where contention and division are everywhere, water can unify and make us better world citizens and people.

2.2 billion individuals live without access to safe water. When we act to lower that number through water solutions in developing nations, we provide health, education, and financial opportunities. We provide an escape from poverty. We provide and share life.

The world water crisis is the lack of clean, safe water for drinking, cooking and sanitation. While water is scarce in regions across the globe, it is further limited when we look at the amount of water that is safe to drink, cook with, and carry out basic hygiene.

In the search for water, billions of individuals are forced to give up educational and economic opportunities to get water for themselves and their families. All too often the water that people walk hours to retrieve is full of bacteria and viruses like E. Coli, dysentery, and cholera. As a result, people–especially children–get sick and die.

The World Water Crisis Impact

– 2.2 billion people (1 in 4 people around the world) live without safely managed drinking water.

– Women and children spend an estimated 200 million hours each year collecting water, time taken away from work, home, and school.

– Every two minutes, a child dies from a waterborne illness.

In a world of scarcity and hardship, clean water can provide everything from hope and economic opportunity to life.

The UN’s sixth sustainable development goal (SDG6)  is that everyone can access clean water and sanitation by 2030. Together, we can help achieve that goal, one water filter and well at a time.

What Water for Life Charity is doing to participate

World Water Day is one day every year, but clean water is a daily need.

When we work together across national lines, across political ideologies, and across cultural and linguistic differences to end the world water crisis, we allow water to act as a catalyst for peace in our own lives. When we work together to end the world water crisis, we share peace, hope and life in the lives of others.
